Our Great American Pizza Story Begins…
In April 1895, Italian immigrant Gennaro Lombardi purchased a ticket and boarded the Kronprinz Friedrich Wilhelm, sailing for New York from his homeland of Naples, Italy. Gennaro shared the dream of all immigrants: to make a wonderful new life in America.
Gennaro first opened a grocery store, but soon it became a popular place for construction workers to buy delicious lunches rather than groceries. He started making tasty cheese pies that workers could carry to their job sites, thus giving birth to the New York pizza.
His cheese pie business became so successful that he opened the first American Pizzeria in 1905, earning him the title of
"The Father of American Pizza". Gennaro apprenticed many other
great pizzaiolos the old-fashioned way: just as we do at Gennaro’s. Gennaro eventually influenced the palate and culture of our nation.
Today, his legacy continues in our passion for pizza and our traditional New York recipes. We bake our pies on stone deck ovens, we use 100% whole milk mozzarella and authentic Italian recipes. Our dough is prepared daily and hand-stretched, just like in Italy, and our delicious sauce is an secret family recipe that has been passed down for many generations, and prepared fresh each morning.
